Belfast being both the largest and the capital city of Northern Ireland is where most travellers will pass through at least once during their travels of Ireland. Find out which is Belfast’s top hostel and why you should stay.

With a lot of recent political and religious turmoil as well as many significant historic events happening in Belfast you will want to spend a few days exploring this city. This being so, it’s important to find a great hostel to base yourself which is affordable and you feel comfortable.

So what is Belfast’s top city hostel and why should you stay here?

Belfast’s top hostel has a top location

The Global Village is located within the Queen’s Quarter of Belfast. This Southern end of the city is home to Queen’s University, giving the whole area a cool college vibe. You won’t come short finding quirky cafe’s, bookstores, secondhand clothing stores and a plethora of traditional Irish bars offering live music.

From the hostel, you are within walking distance to everything the city has to offer. A 10-minute walk will take you into the heart of the city, while just around the corner you will find yourself surrounded by the beautiful botanic gardens and the Ulster Museum. Slightly further afield you can stroll along the waterfront until the reach the Titanic exhibition.

Next, throw in nightly outings and a great social scene

Are you a solo traveller? The Global Village is a great hostel for meeting other backpackers. Each night the hostel arranges an outing to a particular bar. Meet downstairs to join a game of beer pong or fußball while mingling and having a few pre-drinks. At around 10 pm, the crew leaves to the bar of the night. Expect to hear some great local bands and hit the dance floor with your new best friends.

Ok, so now you’re feeling pretty sorry for yourself but feeling like you need to see the tourist sights

Not to worry, the hostel crew are all super friendly and knowledgeable about the area. They’ll book you a Black Cab Tour, or write your name down to get a crew together to share the cost. The staff will direct you on which buses to catch to reach the Belfast Castle and Cave Hill. All the staff I met were international and are helping out on visa’s or working for free accommodation. This being so, they can relate to the needs of a backpacker and have recently sought out all the same tourist sights.

What else does the Belfast’s top hostel offer?

For under 20€ a night for a shared dorm room ranging from 4-8 beds you also receive a free breakfast. Breakfast includes various cereals, brown and white bread with butter and spreads. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate facilities are provided 24/7.

As mentioned before in the dining area, you have a pool and fußball table. There is also a comfortable living room with board games and a tv which connects to Netflix. A bonus that most hostels don’t offer is they will print anything free of charge for you. All you need to do is send to a particular email and they’ll print out boarding passes, bus tickets, etc.

Do you have a car? The street out the front has free parking! During the summer months, you can enjoy a BBQ on the outdoor terrace. For a small fee, you can also do your laundry. Although my stay was not in the peak of summer there was never a wait for showers and they had great water pressure.

Wow! This hostel seems great.. Is there anything not to like?

While the rooms are big and spacious, there is limited access to powerpoints and beds do not have a personal light.

If you can handle not having these small things I’m sure you will have a great stay at The Global Village Hostel. It’s very homey, you will feel comfortable wearing your pj’s around.
